1293786 Citric acid PFIZER Inc 19 April 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 25682/71 Heading C2C Citric acid is prepared by aerobic fermentation of an aqueous carbohydrate containing medium using a citric acid accumulating strain of Candida in the presence of n-hexadecylcitric acid or trans-aconitic acid in a concentration of at least about 100 p.p.m. w./v. The use of Candida guilliermondii ATCL 9058 is exemplified together with many other strains. A molasses is the preferred carbohydrate source and nitrogen sources, minerals and vitamins may be present. Salts or derivatives of the tricarboxylic acids which may be converted to the free acids during the reaction may be used.
