GETTING FATTY ACID METHYL ESTERS BY BARIUM HYDROXIDE CATALYZED METHANOLYSIS REACTION

Invention herewith described refers to procedure for getting fatty acid methyl esters by barium hydroxide catalyzed methanolysis reaction. The procedure is developed for getting fatty acid methyl esters by methanolysis of vegetable oils using barium hydroxide as the catalyst. Barium hydroxide is prepared by drying Ba(OH)2•8H2O under vacuum at a temperature of 200º C for 10 h, cooling and grinding. The methanolysis is carried out in batch conditions at the atmospheric pressure and the temperatures from 10 º to 60º C, at the molar ratio of methanol to oil of 3:1 to 9:1 and the amount of catalyst from 0.1 to 10% calculated on the oil mass. The yield of fatty acid methyl esters is 97% for 60 minutes of reaction duration at a temperature of 25º C and the amount of barium hydroxide of 2.5% calculated on the oil mass.
