Systems and methods for controlling spooling of linear material including a motor and controller

An automatic reel for facilitating the spooling of linear material is disclosed. The automatic reel includes a rotatable member, a motor, and a motor controller. The rotatable member has a spool surface and is capable of winding a linear material around the spool surface as the rotatable member rotates in a first direction. The rotatable member is also capable of deploying the linear material from around the spool surface as the rotatable member rotates in a second direction. The motor is capable of interacting with the rotatable member to selectively rotate the rotatable member in the first direction or in the second direction. The motor controller is capable of sensing a parameter associated with the motor and indicative of a tension of the linear material. The motor controller is capable of outputting a control signal to cause the motor to rotate the rotatable member in the second direction to deploy the linear material when the sensed parameter indicates that the tension of the linear material exceeds a certain amount.
