PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a satisfactory transfer image free from image defects, such as the partial deficiency of an image, image blur, and a rough image, by making a lubricant uniform after application of the lubricant to the cleaned surface of a member to be coated, in an image forming apparatus of an intermediate transfer system. SOLUTION: A cleaning blade 15a is brought into contact with the surface 1 of a photoreceptor belt at the upstream of the location where the lubricant is applied by the brush roller 82. In addition, a lubricant uniformizing blade 85 is brought into contact with the surface of the photoreceptor belt at the downstream of the location. Thus, residual toner is removed by the cleaning blade, the lubricant is applied to the cleaned surface of the photoreceptor belt, and then the surface of the lubricant is uniformized to form a lubricant layer of uniform thickness. This prevents image defects, such as partial deficiency of the image, the image blur, and the rough image, and maintains the coating function of the brush roller over a long period of time.
