A method of determining a position of an object, such as an endoscope, in a virtual environment, such as a human or animal passageway or cavity, and assessing the performance of a user in the movement of the object. The assessment includes comparing the path of the object as manipulated/guided by the user to a predetermined preferred path. The predetermined preferred path is represented as a sequence of steps required to reach a goal. The user's path is determined by monitoring the position and orientation of at least a portion of the object within the simulated environment. Also disclosed is a method of determining a position of orientation of an object, such as an endoscope, in a virtual environment, including representing the object as a plurality of segments, determining a movement of the object in the virtual environment in response to user input, determining whether a segment of the object impacts or collides with a wall of the virtual environment and determining an escape direction for the object following the impact. The user input comes from a mock endoscope, including a tube, sensors sensing the movement of the tube and translating the movement into the computer-simulated virtual environment. |
