The tool (10) has a die plate (18) movable relative to a punch (16). A part (20) to be formed is clamped between a blank holder (36) and the plate such that the part is formed to a preset reference shape by common movement of the holder and the plate relative to the punch. The plate is detached from the holder and a down holding device (22) is detached from the punch for releasing the formed part. A coupling device (40) is provided at the holder for controlling a relative movement of the holder, the down holding device and the formed part during lifting of the plate from the punch. An independent claim is also included for a method for forming a part.
