METHOD OF EVALUATING OPTICAL FIBER CHARACTERISTIC AND METHOD OF IDENTIFYING OPTICAL FIBER CORE WIRE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to confirm that effectual single mode conditions are satisfied at a specific wavelength in an arbitrary optical fiber.

SOLUTION: An optical pulse with a wavelength ofλa is emitted to one end 23a of an objective optical fiber 23, and an optical pulse tester 21 for measuring back scattered light is arranged. At the same time, a mode converter 24 for converting a transmission mode LP01 with a wavelength ofλato a higher-order mode LP11 is arranged between the optical fiber 23 and the optical pulse tester 21 to measure a lossα11of the LP11 in the optical fiber 23. The optical pulse tester 21 is connected to the other end 23a of the optical fiber 23 to measure a lossα01of the LP01 in the optical fiber 23. A loss ratio k=α11-α01(dB) of the lossα11of the LP11 to thatα01of the LP01 is computed, and when the loss ratio k is a predetermined threshold Q(dB) or above, the optical fiber is judged to be single mode transmission.
