The production system is configured from a number of processing and handling modules (K2,K4,K5) and connecting transportation modules (K1). The modules have input and output interfaces that have coding values that indicate the compatibility of the modules. Each handling module (K1-K5) has an electrical and/or mechanical interface e.g. in and/or out feed units (A1-A3, E1-E3) which couple the modules with each other. Each interface unit is assigned a coding unit (CE1-CE5), which contains information about the type, characteristics and/or compatibility of the modules and each unit has a code reader. Coding unit is connected with control unit (SE1-SE5) for automatic configuration of the neighboring modules. Coding unit is in form of mechanical plug connection with binary coded pin strip or optical or magnetic coding.
