PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article counting device which is easy to operate and can count articles at high speed without mistakes. SOLUTION: After template data of an article to be counted is generated from an image of one article picked up by an imaging means, a counting target image including images of a plurality of articles to be counted is obtained. and the counting target image is subjected to labelling processing to obtain sets of pixels in a pixel connection state, and an area of each set of pixels is compared with an area of template data to obtain a first count value resulting from counting the number of sets of pixels of which the areas are approximately equal to the area of template data, and template data is used to perform shape recognition with respect to each of sets of pixels of which the areas are larger than the area of the template data, and these sets of articles are separated into a plurality of articles to obtain a second count value resulting from counting the number of separated articles, and the first count value and the second count value are added and the addition result is output.
