Welding process chiefly for steel tubes designed for assembly. Weld metal in the liquid state can dissolve solid metal of, e.g. the tubes, which upon cooling has good mechanical props. The weld is carried out by holding the tubes together under slight pressure with the filler metal in the weld gap and raising the temp. The filler metal is an alloy of 20-60% Ni and 80-40% Mn which can contain other alloys identical to the tubes or beneficial to the weld properties (up to 70% Fe, steel, chromium or othr metals with a m. pt. >1400 degrees C). During the welding the weld area is heated to 1050-1400 degrees C for 1-30 sec. The filler metal may be in the form of solid rings, powdered, or any suitable shape. By this process it is poss. to weld tubes 500 mm in dia. without using skilled labour and at a more rapid rate.
|
