The present invention discloses a method and system for transmitting data packets at a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) application server, wherein the method comprises: the M2M application server obtains a group identifier of a destination group; according to the correspondence between IPv6 address prefixes and group identifiers, the M2M application server obtains the IPv6 address prefix corresponding to the group identifier of the destination group; according to the IPv6 address prefix, the M2M application server transmits the data packets to the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) serving the destination group, wherein the IPv6 address prefix is carried in the data packets. In an embodiment of the present invention, an IPv6 address prefix is allocated for a group in M2M application, a group identifier of a destination group is obtained according to the IPv6 address prefix, and the data packets are transmitted to the GGSN serving the destination group, thereby transmitting the data packets to M2M application terminals in a group can be implemented, and the resource of IP address can be saved.
