Provided are liquid crystal compounds which not only have large negative permittivity anisotropy (?e) and high upper limit temperature (TNI) of the nematic phase, but also exhibit at least one other characteristic such as heat or light stability, proper refractive index anisotropy (?n), or excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds. The liquid crystal compounds are represented by general formula (1) [wherein R1 and R2 are each C1-10 alkyl, C1-9 alkoxy, or C2-10 alkenyl; A and B are each 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z1 and Z2 are each a single bond; Z3 is -CH2O- or -OCH2-; Y1 and Y2 are each halogen, -CF3, -CHF2, -CH2F, -OCF3, -OCHF2 or -OCH2F; and m and n are each 0, 1 or 2, and p is 1 or 2, with the sum of m, n and p being 1, 2 or 3]. |
