<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for obtaining a feature amount accurately capturing features in a local region even in contour shape other than straight lines, when calculating gradient strength distribution for each gradient direction in the local region as a feature amount. <P>SOLUTION: As to a target pixel in a local region in an input image, edge strength in each of the prescribed number of directions is calculated (S705). One or more of the prescribed number of directions are selected based on an average value of edge strengths obtained in respective directions (S706).
