<p>The method involves directly irradiating coins and banknotes in cash compartments of a cash register system with UV-C-radiation emitters in a range of 240-270 nanometers. The coins and the banknotes in the compartments of the cash register system are indirectly irradiated with the UV-C-radiation emitters by reflectors or reflecting surfaces. Emitter lamps are automatically switched on and the coins and the banknotes are irradiated for a time period when closing a cash register. The emitter lamps are automatically switched off after the time period.</p>
