PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for refining nanodiamond by efficiently removing graphite phase from nanodiamond containing the graphite phase with high rate at a low cost, and to provide high purity refined nanodiamond. SOLUTION: In the method for refining the nanodiamond containing the graphite phase and having≤250 nm median diameter measured by a dynamic light scattering method, (1) the nanodiamond having the graphite phase is subcritically or supercritically treated in a fluid, where oxygen and a treating solvent composed of water and/or alcohol coexist, at a temperature equal to or above the standard boiling point of the treating solvent under pressure equal to or above≥1 atmospheric pressure (gauge pressure); or (2) the nanodiamond having the graphite phase is supercritically treated with a solution containing an acidic compound.
