<p>Load restraining apparatus (10; 100) for a trailer, comprising an elongate load restraining clement (18; 118), al least one attachment member (12; 111, 112) for attachment to a celling (30; 130) of a trailer and a retractable support assembly (14, 16; 113, 114) connected between the at least one attachment member and a middle portion of the load restraining clement (18; 1 18), the retractable support assembly (14, 16; 113, 114) permitting movement of the middle portion of the load restraining element (18; 118) relative to the at least one attachment member (12; 111, 112) from a retracted position adjacent to the ceiling (30; 130) to an extended position, and being operative to move the middle portion of the load restraining element (18; 118) from the extended position to the retracted position.
