<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image coding method which codes the data relating to a size of an image in the small number of bits without deteriorating the accuracy of an expressible output pixel. <P>SOLUTION: In the image coding method, a ratio of the number of pixels of brightness to the number of pixels of color difference in an image signal is coded, and at least one coding method among coding methods is selected according to its ratio. (1) The method to code the value of 1/M of the number of the horizontal pixels, and the value of 1/N of the number of vertical pixels when a ratio of the number of the horizontal pixels of a brightness signal to the number of horizontal pixels of a color difference signal in the image signal is M:1, and the ratio of the number of vertical pixels of the brightness signal to the number of vertical pixels of the color difference signal is N:1, and (2) the method to code the value of 1/M of the number of the horizontal pixels when the ratio of the number of the horizontal pixels of the brightness signal to the number of the horizontal pixels of the color difference signal is M:1, and the ratio of the number of the vertical pixels of the brightness signal to the number of the vertical pixels of the color difference signal is 1:1.
