The present invention discloses a method and an apparatus for forwarding multicast data. The method includes: after receiving a joining request sent by users, determining a multicast virtual switch instance (VSI) corresponding to user information based on the user information carried in the joining request; determining information of all the users requesting to join under management of the multicast VSI based on a forwarding table, and forwarding the multicast data from the multicast VSI to all the users, which are under management of the multicast VSI, requesting to join based on the information of all the users requesting to join, wherein the forwarding table is used for recording corresponding relation between the multicast VSI and the information of all the users requesting to join. An effect of saving network bandwidth and reducing protocol message amount can be achieved with this invention.
