<p>1325347 Subaqueous structures BALLAST NEDAM GROEP NV 4 Sept 1970 [4 Sept 1969] 42577/70 Heading E1H A quay 26 comprises a caisson having an earth-retaining wall 2 and plates 27 attached thereto by supports 33, the ground area covered by the plates being less than the area of the wall 2 projected on to a horizontal plane so that the retained soil is supported mainly directly by the stretch of ground upon which the plates rest. Ballast chambers 9 may be provided in floodable chambers 14, 15 adjacent the front wall 4 to facilitate trimming during sinking of the caisson on to its site, which may include a dredged trench 12 and gravel bed 11. Openings 28, which may be closed by covers (not shown), may be formed in the wall 4. A drain layer may be deposited adjacent the bottom of the wall 2, Figs. 4a and 4b (not shown).
