PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope which has a simple configuration not incurring an increase in the cost thereof, which can be easily switched between forward observation and backward observation without unnecessarily moving the entire endoscope while being inserted in the body, and which has excellent user-friendliness. SOLUTION: An insertion section 11 which is to be inserted into the body includes: a shaft body 12 extending rectilinearly and having an objective lens 12a provided on the tip side; and an outer tube 20 in which the shaft body 12 is fitted so as to be movable forward and backward along the axial direction. An opening 21 for observing the surroundings through the objective lens 12a is formed on the tip side of the outer tube 20, and a reflecting mirror 22 is provided within the opening 21 on the tip side. By moving the shaft body 12 in the forward and backward directions relative to the outer tube 20, at least the two of the forward observation in which the objective lens 12a is at a position spaced from the reflecting mirror 22 and the backward observation through the reflecting mirror 22, in which the objective lens 12a is at a position close to the reflecting mirror 22, can be performed.
