PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stretched optical film obtained by stretching a resin having a negative intrinsic birefringence, achieving a large phase difference, a high versatility in optical design, and an excellent resistance against thermal decomposition. SOLUTION: The stretched optical film is obtained by stretching a resin (G) having a negative intrinsic birefringence. The resin (G) contains, as a major component, a polymer (F) having a (meth)acrylate unit, an aromatic vinyl compound unit and an aromatic maleimide unit as constitution units and having a negative intrinsic birefringence. The weight average molecular weight of the polymer (F) is 100,000 to 300,000 and, in the polymer (F), the amount X of the (meth)acrylate unit, the amount Y of the aromatic vinyl compound unit and the amount Z of the aromatic maleimide unit represented by wt.% fulfill the formulas of: 45≤X≤85; 10≤Y≤40; 5≤Z≤20; and Y>Z.
