PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for starting arc welding which can satisfactorily start arc welding even if an electrical insulating material is present in a welding base material when the arc welding is started. SOLUTION: In the method for starting arc welding where an arc is generated between a welding wire 17 and a welding base material W so as to perform welding, upon the start of the welding operation, when an energizing state between the welding wire 17 and the welding base material W is not detected, by moving the welding wire 17 to the welding base material W, the welding wire 17 is contacted to the welding base material W. According to this method, by the moving operation of the welding wire 17, e.g., an electrical insulating material Is on the welding base material W can be removed, thus arc welding can be satisfactorily started.
