<p>An illuminating device is provided with: a first light guiding means (3) wherein light inputted from one end surface is propagated inside and outputted from the other end surface; an illuminating optical system (1), which spatially separates the luminous flux outputted from the other end surface of the first light guiding means (3) into a plurality of luminous fluxes, and forms an optical image formed on the other end surface of the first light guiding means (3) on a display element (12); a reflecting polarizing plate (11), which is arranged between the illuminating optical system (1) and the display element (12), transmits first polarization light and reflects second polarization light in a polarization state different from that of the first polarization light in the direction toward the illuminating optical system (1); and a reflecting element (7), which is arranged at a position where the luminous fluxes are formed by being spatially separated, and has transmitting regions which transmit the luminous fluxes, respectively, and a reflecting film formed in the regions other than the transmitting regions so as to reflect light reflected by the reflecting polarizing plate (11) in the direction toward the reflecting polarizing plate (11); and a retardation plate (10) arranged between the reflecting element (7) and the reflecting polarizing plate (11).</p> |
