<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium ion secondary battery capable of efficiently diffusing heat generated inside the battery toward outside. <P>SOLUTION: The lithium ion secondary battery includes a flat-plate electrode assembly 2 configured by stacking a positive electrode 3, a separator 5, and a negative electrode 4 in a thickness direction, a non-aqueous electrolyte, and a battery case 7 holding them. The positive electrode 3 includes a rectangular-shape positive electrode current collector body and a positive electrode active material layer carried on a surface of the positive electrode current collector body, and includes a first region which seamlessly extends toward outside from at least two edges of the positive electrode current collector body and is not covered with the positive electrode active material layer. The negative electrode 4 includes a rectangular-shape negative electrode collector body and an negative electrode active material layer carried on a surface of the negative electrode current collector body, and includes a second region which seamlessly protruded outside from at least two edges of the negative electrode current collector body and is not covered with the negative electrode active material layer. The positive electrode current collector body and the negative electrode current collector body overlap with each other, and the first region and the second region do not overlap each other.
