<p>Preparing a calcium carbonate particle and fiber fibril containing composite material comprises (a) providing a suspension containing cellulose fibril and/or starch fibril; (b) adding calcium carbonate particle to the suspension; (c) adding calcium ion to the suspension, where the weight ratio of the calcium ion to the fibril is adjusted to 0.02:1-0.2:1; (d) adjusting the pH value of the suspension to at least 7.5; and (e) adding carbon dioxide or a carbonate salt different from calcium carbonate to the suspension and incubating the suspension. Preparing a calcium carbonate particle and fiber fibril containing composite material comprises (a) providing a suspension containing cellulose fibril and/or starch fibril; (b) adding calcium carbonate particle to the suspension, where: the calcium carbonate particle exhibits a scalenohedral morphology and an average particle diameter (d 50)of greater than 2.5-4 mu m and the weight ratio of fibril to calcium carbonate particle is adjusted to 0.2:1-4:1; (c) adding a calcium ion to the suspension, where the weight ratio of the calcium ion to the fibril is adjusted to 0.02:1-0.2:1; (d) adjusting the pH value of the suspension to at least 7.5; and (e) adding carbon dioxide or a carbonate salt different from calcium carbonate to the suspension and incubating the suspension. Independent claims are included for: (1) the composite material obtained by the above process; (2) the preparation of paper comprising processing the composite material in a paper machine (30); and (3) the paper obtained by the above process and comprising 5-20, preferably 9-12 wt.% of fibril, and 5-60, preferably 25-35 wt.% of calcium carbonate particle.</p> |
