The invention concerns processing images to correct defects or artefacts occurring as a result of transmission or storage. It aims to identify inappropriate operation of image correction due to "false alarms" or incorrect identification of defects which in turn allows a higher-sensitivity detection process to be used and therefore more "genuine" defects to be corrected. The invention involves control of image correction by a gradient measure which is evaluated over the periphery of an image region to be corrected. An accumulated gradient measure is formed along the periphery of the region to be corrected and evaluated for the region both with and without correction. The application of correction to the region is then controlled by the result of the comparison between said measure for the corrected and non-corrected regions with the correction process being inhibited where the gradient measure for the corrected image would be higher than that for the uncorrected image.
