Acidic contaminants such as sulfuric acid, HCl, H2S, mercaptans and organic acids are efficiently removed from organic process streams by contacting the acid-containing streams with a porous granular alkali composed of 5-95 percent NaOH and 95-5 percent CaO or Ca(OH)2. The process is preferably carried out by introducing the organic stream at the bottom of a column of alkali with a sump or reservoir below the bottom.
