1341244 Photopolymerizable compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 7 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 31879/71 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Photopolymerizable compositions comprise an addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound and a photo-activatable polymerization initiating system including (a)αhexaaryl bi-imidazole (which term is used to include bi-imidazoles containing heterocyclic aromatic groups) which absorbs maximally in the 255-275 mÁ region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is'dissociated by ultraviolet light to triarylimidazolyl radicals and (b) as sensitizer a compound of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R 3 is H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, Cl or methoxy, R 4 and R 5 are each H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or phenyl, or taken together represent -(CH 2 ) m - where m is 2, 3 or 4, and n is 0 or 1, which compound has its principal light absorption bands in the visible regions of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. The initiator system may additionally include a leuco dye that is oxidizable to dye by triarylimidazolyl radicals. Other optional components include photo-oxidizable amines, e.g. an acid salt of an amino triaryl methane leuco dye, chain transfer agents, e.g. N-phenylglycine, 1,1-dimethyl-3,5- diketocyclohexane or an organic thiol, and polymeric binders, e.g. cellulose acetate butyrate. Preferred ethylenically unsaturated compounds are acrylates and methacrylates of polyols, e.g. triethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
