Each panel has a cross-bar addressing system of electrodes 25, 26; 35, 36; 45, 46 either covered with insulating material 24, 34 and 44 or exposed to the gas filling which may be a mixture of He and either Xe or Kr. Plates 22 and 32 separating the panels are of U.V.- or I.R. -absorbing material depending on whether or not the excitation of the material 47 is primarily by U.V. or I.R. Alternatively the dielectric layers 24, 34 and 44 may be made of U.V.- absorbing material, or separate layers of such material may be provided. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) the discharge spaces 23, 33 and 43 are each divided into a plurality of separate cells and a spot of luminescent material is provided in each cell of one panel. This arrangement reduces cross-talk which may be further reduced by including optical fibres in the plates 22 and 32. In a further alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) providing a multi-colour display, strips of red-, green- and blue-emitting phosphors are arranged in repeated order parallel to the electrodes 45 of panel 40 so that a picturedisplay element is defined by three electrodes 45 and one electrode 46. The discharge spaces 23, 33 and 43 may be in communication through holes in the plates 22 and 32. Alternatively the panels may be individually sealed with a different gas composition in each panel. A fourth panel may be added to the stack. The X and Y electrodes of each panel may be insulated from each other and located on the same wall surface.
