1411584 Splicing webs HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 6 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 56329/72 Heading B8R In a method of and apparatus for wrapping tobacco rods for cigarettes &c., an expiring wrapping web 11 is spliced to a replacement web 18, and the rod wrapped with the spliced portion is rejected. On near expiry of the expiring web reel (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), a light sensor (19) actuates an electromagnet 61 which draws the expiring web 11 into contact with a friction roller 52. The replacement web 18, previously clamped on to the periphery of a drum 43 by a clamp 47, is thus accelerated up to a speed less than that of the expiring web, the roller 52 being in driving connection with the drum. The roller 52 also drives a splicing drum 78, at a speed equal to that of the expiring web 11, and a control drum 107. The drum 107 comprises control discs 107a, 107b, 107c, having cams which actuate electric switches 109a, 109b, 109c respectively in a control circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown). Initially, switch 109c actuates an electromagnet 91 which causes a carrier 82 to pivot upwardly bringing a splicing drum 42, the web 18, a two sided adhesive strip 62, the web 11 and the splicing drum 78 into contact thereby effecting a splice between the webs. At the same time, a roller 89 on the carrier operates a cutter 111 which cuts the expring web 11. Additionally, a catch means is released allowing a carrier plate 63 to move from its illustrated position, for reception of a new adhesive strip 62. The leading end of the replacement web upstream of the splice is cut off by a fixed knife 112 as the web turns about a guide roller 38. The switch 109b is actuated to start a blower (32) at the precise moment a rod containing the splice is passing thereby removing it from further treatment. Switch 109a then de-energizes the electromagnet 61 and may actuate a brake for the roller 52.
