PURPOSE: A flame retardant composition is provided to minimize the generation of toxic gas in the fire by not using organic solvents and to impart fire retardant characteristic to expanded polystyrene beads. CONSTITUTION: A flame retardant composition includes 20~40 parts by weight of aluminum hydroxide, 10~40 parts by weight of expanded graphite, 18~40 parts by weight of vinyl acetate resin, 5~10 parts by weight of a hardener and 30~50 parts by weight of water. A method for preparing flame retardant expanded polystyrene beads comprises the steps of: injecting the flame retardant composition and expanded polystyrene beads in a weight ratio of 1:1 in a stirrer; stirring them at 50~150 rpm for 10~20 minutes to coat the surface of the expanded polystyrene beads with the flame retardant.
