A cover for a vacuum dewatering box comprises a frame, and a plurality of blocks secured selectively to at least one cross direction (CD) extending support secured to the frame. Each block includes a wear surface and has a perimetric shape including two machine direction (MD) sides at least one MD side being oriented at an angle from the MD. At least some of the blocks are spaced apart to form at least one slot, each slot extending through the cover and being oriented substantially in the CD. The slots may be a plurality of discontinuous slots or at least one continuous non-linear slot; and the slots have a configuration defined by the perimetric shape of the blocks and their location in relation to each other. The invention provides reduced wear on fabrics carried over the box, while maintaining desired drainage properties.
