The method involves overflowing an air mass (mL-abg) from the air intake system (20) into the waste gas system (22) during a valve overlap of the gas shuttle valves (16,18) by controlling interferences on a variable control. The extent of the enrichment of the combustion chamber-fuel/air mixture is examined for detecting an overheating risk in the catalyzer (52). A measure is captured which limits the free amount of heat liberated by an exothermic reactions in catalyzer. An independent claim is also included for a control device of a combustion engine. |
