PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight of a liquid crystal display device, which can prevent a black line from entering upon the whole screen display and makes a non-display part look perfectly black on the partial screen display without disposing a complicated mechanism. SOLUTION: Besides backlight 1 (11 to 13) for the whole screen irradiation, a backlight 2 for the partial screen irradiation is disposed on a position opposite to a portion 12a of a light guide plate 12, and the backlight 2 for the partial screen irradiation includes a prism sheet 22 which converges light emitted from a second light source 21 in the normal direction with respect to a part 12a of the light guide plate 12. As the result, it is made unnecessary to dispose a complicated mechanism for moving one optical source and it is also made unnecessary to physically divide the light guide plate 12 and the display panel 32 for the partial screen display. At the same time, when a second LED 21 is turned on to perform the partial screen display, a first LED 11 is turned off to emit light by using only a portion 12a of the light guide plate 12.
