PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently apply a highlighting process even if an image reproduction signal does not sufficiently include a high frequency component due to compressed image data recorded on a recording medium.

SOLUTION: Image data recorded on the recording medium 3 is reproduced by access means 12, and a decompression process is performed by a decompression unit 19 to produce an image reproduction signal. Signal processing means 11 generates a first intermediate image including components around a prescribed frequency band of the image reproduction signal. The first intermediate image is subjected to a nonlinear process to generate a high frequency component. The high frequency component is added to the first intermediate image to generate a second intermediate image. The second intermediate image is added to the image reproduction signal and the added result is output.
