PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce ranging error in phase difference AF control by hybrid AF including contrast AF and phase difference AF. SOLUTION: The focusing method includes the contrast AF and the phase difference AF to perform focusing on the basis of a phase difference between a pair of image signals obtained by photoelectric conversion by a pixel group for focus detection. When moving speed of a subject is equal to or above a threshold, focusing is performed by the phase difference AF. When the moving speed is under the threshold, focusing is performed by either of the contrast AF and the phase difference AF according to a predetermined condition. When the moving speed is equal to or above the threshold, a distance to the subject when acquiring the pair of image signals next time is predicted, and the area of the pixel group for acquiring the pair of image signals next time, in areas of the pixel groups for focus detection, is set according to the predicted distance.
