PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress image quality deterioration due to transfer dust or the like, caused upon transfer from an image carrier to a recording medium in the case of high-speed printing of continuous paper, and to secure a predetermined printable area on a printing start/stop page without causing image quality deterioration in the leading final column on the leading final page upon an disjunction operation from the photoreceptor or upon starting/stopping the printing operation, thereby enhancing transfer efficiency in the case of tandem printing. SOLUTION: The transfer device includes: a first charging means for charging the surface of the recording medium with a polarity opposite to a toner charging polarity in a contactless state; a second charging means, disposed on the upstream side of the first charging means in the recording medium conveying direction, for charging the surface of the recording medium with the polarity opposite to the charging polarity of the first charging means in a contactless state; a disjunction means for performing disjunction of the recording medium from the image carrier which carries a toner image to make the recording medium in contact with the image carrier; and a contact range-adjusting means for adjusting the size of the contact range formed by the disjunction means, where the image carrier and the recording medium come into contact with each other.
