Disclosed is a macromolecular hydrogel, having polyethylene glycol as an organic component, and which has improved mechanical properties, flexibility, and transparency and particularly improved tensile strength and stretch ratio. The macromolecular hydrogel decomposes in a moderate atmosphere but the post decomposition components are non-toxic, thus the hydrogel can be used as a material for bio-implants. Also, proteins can be included in the macromolecular hydrogel; the included proteins are thermally stabilised, and thus are able to function even at higher temperatures. The organic/inorganic composite hydrogel is a conjugate of: a macromolecular compound (A), comprising a branch structure or a network structure wherein a plurality of polyethylene glycol chains are chemically cross-linked; and a clay mineral (B), which has undergone lamellar separation. Also disclosed is a production method for the macromolecular hydrogel. |
