<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abrasion detecting device capable of detecting abrasion of a component in a cutter head such as a roller cutter, with no workman required to enter a chamber. <P>SOLUTION: An abrasion detecting device 70 of a roller cutter 5 of a cutter head of a tunnel excavator which forms a tunnel by excavating a mounting 14 with the roller cutter 5, is equipped with an abrasion detector 50 positioned retracted, by a specified distance, from the front end of the roller cutter 5 while retracted, by a specified distance, from the front end of he roller cutter 5 intended to detect abrasion of the cutter head. The abrasion detector 50 has, at its front end, an abrasion detecting section 51 which is worn when contacting to the mounting 14 to be excavated.
