For a motor vehicle (102) fitted with a camera to control the headlamps, at least two light characteristic changes from external sources (105,110,111,112) are registered as successive image data e.g. from street lamps or the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the like and the time interval between the light changes is registered. The spatial gap (107) is debounced between the light characteristic changes according to the vehicle speed and the time interval between them. The headlight beam is altered from normal (103) to a deflected setting (104) to ensure that the driver has a clear view of the road ahead.
