The device (1) has a punching sheet metal (7) arranged at a upper tool retainer (2) and provided with a cutting edge (7a), whose gradient corresponds to a contour that is formed in a card body (9) or a card sheet. A magnet bed (6) and another punching sheet metal (8) are designed against the former metal at a lower tool retainer (4). The metals and the magnet bed are pressed against each other such that the contour is punched out from the card body that is arranged between the metals and the magnet bed according to the gradient. The body is grooved between the metals and the magnet bed. An independent claim is also included for a method for formation of contour in the body of the portable data medium.
