摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermally assisted magnetic recording head where a light source having a sufficient output for thermal assist is provided on an integration surface of a slider substrate in order to improve mass productivity. SOLUTION: The head has a laminate structure including a photonic band layer. The head includes: a light source whose light-emitting surface, or a layered surface as one end surface of the lamination structure faces the integration surface of the substrate; a diffraction optical element converging light emitted from the light-emitting surface; an optical path conversion element converting the light propagation direction of the converged light; a waveguide propagating the light with the propagation direction converted by the optical path conversion element toward a medium facing surface; and a magnetic pole generating a writing magnetic field. The surface-emitting optical source includes an photonic band layer having a periodic structure causing light emitted from an active region to resonate, and emits laser light according to a principle completely different from VCSEL. As a result, the light source can be arranged on the integration surface of the slider substrate even though having a sufficient output for thermal assist. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
