PURPOSE: A mobile terminal capable of receiving gesture input and a control method thereof are provided to control various operations of a portable terminal through multi gesture input. CONSTITUTION: A control unit sets up a lock state(S200). When a communication event occurs, the control unit displays notification information on a display unit(S205,S210). If the notification information is displayed, the control unit judges the input of a preset gesture corresponding to the notification information. If there is the input for the preset gesture, the control unit releases the locking state. The control unit controls the entry into operation mode associated with the notification information(S220).
