摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel electron transport substance which, as compared with a conventional electron transport substance, has more excellent organic solvent solubility and film-forming properties and more excellent electron transport capacity and to provide an excellent electrophotographic photoreceptor reduced in potential change upon being repeatedly used by using the novel electron transport substance. SOLUTION: There are provided a substituted hydroxyphenyl compound represented by formula (1) (wherein at least either of R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>5</SB>is a hydroxymethyl group; and at least one of groups other than hydroxymethyl groups of R<SB>2</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>is a group having an electron-accepting site) and having a reduction side value of the oxidation/reduction potential of -0.20 to -0.90 V in relation to an SCE reference electrode (saturated calomel electrode) and an electrophotographic photoreceptor containing the compound.
