VARIABLE DELAY GENERATOR FOR SIGNAL LIGHT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable delay generating device for signal light, which can compensate wavelength dispersion and a dispersion slope by generating a large delay amount in a short optical fiber.

SOLUTION: The variable delay generating device includes: a first optical fiber 13 and a second optical fiber 14 disposed between a transmitter 11 and a receiver 12; a wavelength converter 15, which is disposed between the transmitter and the first optical fiber and converts the wavelength of signal light into a wavelength at which the first optical fiber shows a cumulative dispersion value B (ps/nm) and a cumulative dispersion slope value C (ps/nm2); and a phase conjugate light generator 16, which is disposed between the first optical fiber and the second optical fiber and converts the signal light into phase conjugate light having a wavelength at which the second optical fiber shows a dispersion value D (ps/nm/km) and a different sign of a dispersion slope from that of the cumulative dispersion slope value C. Both of the first and second optical fibers have wavelength dispersion characteristics exhibiting a downwardly protruding curve in a communication wavelength region of from 600 nm to 1,700 nm.
