PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of failure in document reading, which is caused when a folding type document reader is used while being not normally expanded, by checking an expanded state of the document reader without adding a dedicated sensor or the like to the document reader itself. SOLUTION: A computer 30 which controls the operation of a folding type document reader 10 acquires image data read by a reading unit 1000 of the document reader 10 and detects images corresponding to legs of the document reader 10 from the acquired image data and uses the detection results of the images corresponding to the legs to determine the failure of an expanded state of the document reader 10 and gives a warning.
