Rotating shafts of first and second drive sheaves (11, 13) are respectively horizontally disposed. A car (4) is provided with first and second car suspending pulleys (17-20), and a counterweight (5) is provided with first and second counterweight suspending pulleys (21, 22). A main rope group (16) for suspending the car (4) and the counterweight (5) comprises a first main rope (14) looped over the first car suspending pulleys (17, 18), the first drive sheave (11), and the first counterweight suspending pulley (21) in the order named, and a second main rope (15) looped over the second car suspending pulleys (19, 20), the second drive sheave (13), and the second counterweight suspending pulley (22) in the order named. A first drive unit (8), the first car suspending pulleys (17, 18), and the first counterweight suspending pulley (21), and a second drive unit (9), the second car suspending pulleys (19, 20), and the second counterweight suspending pulley (22) are disposed at positions symmetric with respect to a straight line connecting a pair of car guide rails (2) for guiding the car (4) in the vertical projection plane of a hoistway (1). |
