A hair curler comprises an elongated, cylindrical body portion around which the tress is wound and an element rotatably mounted in one end of the body and having an outwardly projecting arm rod or loop movable from a position projecting axially from the body to one at right angles to the body, engaging the body and resting against the scalp, to prevent unwinding of the hair. As shown, a slotted body 7 of metal or plastic has prongs 8 embracing a plastic ball and shaped to engage a latching rod 10 when the rod is rotated so that the end 11 rests against the scalp. In modifications the prongs are straight-sided and the ball has protuberances and the body is straight-sided and has ridges or grooves to prevent slipping of the hair. The ball may consist of two hemispherical parts secured together by adhesive and enclosing the neck part of a latching loop and in a further modification the ball is replaced by a double-walled part-spherical member provided with a latching loop and engaging inside and outside the prongs.
