There is described a driving assistance system for a vehicle (V) which travels along a roadway (R) that lacks traffic lane demarcation road-markings, in order to aid the maintaining of or the change of direction of travel, comprising:
- at least one device (C) for shooting a scene representing the environment outside the vehicle in its direction of travel;
- an electronic image analysis unit (U) arranged to recognize a roadway (R) in the field of view of the shooting device (C); and
- an electronic control module (U) adapted to determine current conditions of travel of the vehicle (V) and to execute, based on the determined conditions of travel, a preset driving assistance procedure. The control module (U) is arranged to estimate the width of the roadway (R), to determine a number of virtual traffic lanes and their positions in the roadway (R) as a function of predetermined road configuration constraints, to determine the position of the vehicle (V) with respect to the aforementioned virtual traffic lanes, and to flag the driver to indicate an anomalous driving condition or an erroneous driving manoeuvre based on the recognized position of the vehicle with respect to the demarcation lines of the virtual lanes. |
