Method and system for content-based search and retrieval of 3D models using panoramic views

The present disclosure concerns a content-based 3D model search and retrieval method and system for queries in generic 3D model datasets. 3D model comparison is based on the extraction of a set of panoramic views that describe the surface position and orientation of the 3D objects. The panoramic views are obtained by projecting a 3D object to the lateral surfaces of a set of cylinders that are centered at the model's centroid and their axes are parallel to the model's principal axes which are determined by a rotation normalization method. The features that characterize each panoramic view are obtained by computing the 2D Discrete Fourier Transform and 2D Discrete Wavelet Transform.
